چکیده

Spatial variability in abundance and size of sponges are poorly understood compared with other sessile organisms such as corals. A hierarchical survey design across 3 spatial scales — sites nested in locations nested in island groups — examined variation in sponge size and abundance for the common coral reef sponge Coscinoderma matthewsi (Lendenfed, 1886) (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida) in Torres Strait, northern Australia. The abundance of C. matthewsi differed significantly across all 3 spatial scales, varying greatly between sites 200 m apart up to island groups 60 km apart. The size frequency distributions of C. matthewsi varied between sites and island groups, and were positively skewed with populations dominated by small sponges. There was no relationship between sponge abundance and size within and between island groups for C. matthewsi in Torres Strait.

Crustose Coralline Algae and a Cnidarian Neuropeptide Trigger Larval Settlement in Two Coral Reef Sponges

In sessile marine invertebrates, larval settlement is fundamental to population maintenance and persistence. Cues contributing to the settlement choices and metamorphosis of larvae have important implications for the success of individuals and populations, but cues mediating larval settlement for many marine invertebrates are largely unknown. This study assessed larval settlement in two common ...

Reduced Diversity and High Sponge Abundance on a Sedimented Indo-Pacific Reef System: Implications for Future Changes in Environmental Quality

Although coral reef health across the globe is declining as a result of anthropogenic impacts, relatively little is known of how environmental variability influences reef organisms other than corals and fish. Sponges are an important component of coral reef fauna that perform many important functional roles and changes in their abundance and diversity as a result of environmental change has the...

Patterns of Sponge Abundance Across a Gradient of Habitat Quality in the Wakatobi Marine National Park, Indonesia

Sponges are important components of reef communities worldwide, fulfilling a number of important functional roles. Habitat degradation caused by the loss of hard corals has the potential to cause increases in sponge abundance and percentage cover as they gain access to resources such as space and food. In this study we compared sponge densities and percentage cover at sites with varying hard co...

Biodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)

The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...

Factors influencing spatial patterns on coral reefs around Moorea, French Polynesia

Spatial patterns of 5 components of the macrobenthos [corals, macroalgae, mollusks, sponges, and echinoderms) at 42 stations on 4 reef types were compared in Moorea Fifteen a b ~ o t ~ c and biotic factors were measured and included in Canonical Correspondence Analyses. Macrobenthic communities were dominated by corals and macroalgae. Two major gradients (along the bays, and from the fringing r...
